The International Trade Data Network™ has announced plans to provide RSS
trade information feeds for participating agencies, trade associations, and
educational entities. The feeds will be made available on a category basis
with channels such as trade leads, market research, country and industry reports.
It is anticipated that most categories will be available by early to mid-summer of this year. Watch for the new version of the Internet Explorer browser - it will have built-in support for RSS feeds.
RSS is an acronym that can mean "Rich Site Summary", "RDF Site Summary", or "Really Simple Syndication" depending upon whom you ask. It is a format that is primarily known for its use on news sites and "blogs", but more generally, it is a method for distributing and syndicating links to content on a web site.
At minimum, a "feed" consists of a channel, which identifies the source of the content, and then a number of "items" that contain three parts:
RSS feeds are XML documents, not HTML, and therefor must be parsed before presentation to the end user. Today's current crop of browsers cannot display RSS, but some email applications have that capability. Because RSS is XML based, feeds can be consumed by other web sites, news browsers, PDA's, cell phones, email and voice applications.
Content providers and publishers indicate the availability of RSS feeds on their web sites by displaying one of logos below:
For affiliates and partners, implementing feeds on their web sites offers a "hands-off" method of displaying new content for their clients on a daily basis. It goes without saying that pages become "stale", if not refreshed on a regular basis, and that stale equates to a drop in site visitation.
Another benefit is that web operators can incorporate feeds into a site using the design, font, and colors of choice.
Each channel of an RSS feed generally contains up to 15 items. When displayed by a web site, ITDN feeds will look something like the box below:
